Cardboard Bobbins, yuck! by Lovemenot 14 years ago

So, doing an alpha pattern, I decided it would be a wise idea to keep my background string on the cardboard bobbin, making it a lot easier to deal with, rather than if it were just one really long string.
I found the most heavy duty one I could, which appears to be a DMC brand. I've heard their strings are good quality, I figured their bobbins wouldn't be too bad. However.. After just an inch into the pattern, my bobbin started falling apart, first both 'tabs' on each side of the slit fell off, then the middle section between where those slits are supposed to be, and now the top part is about to fall off!! lol. By the time my bracelet is 2 inches long, there will be no bobbin left!

Anyways lol, anyone have other suggestions for dealing with their super long background strings? :)

I know exactly what you're talking about and i have the same problem lol. I just decided to buy the plastic DMC bobbins instead of the cardboard ones, even though there's way more in a pack. But I was just getting irritated because they always kept coming apart lol

That's not a bad idea. Even if I don't want all plastic ones, I can at least get a few just to use for bg strings. It doesn't take long to put string on a bobbin, so transferring the string I already have on cardboard bobbins, to the plastic one, should really only be a small speed bump in the process :)

Yea. Though I meant that you would get more for your buck if you bought the cardboard ones. I dunno if u thought I meant the other way around. But plastic ones are better seeing that they don't fall apart lol

Oh no, I knew what you meant. I was just saying, that most of my string in storage has already been put onto the cardboard bobbins. I could just get a few plastic ones, and when I am doing an alpha, just take the string off of the cardboard one, and onto the plastic :P Normally though, keeping the string on the cardboard ones isn't a hassle, because I only handle it for a few moments, rather than several hours. lol.
