in general, when i'm following a pattern, do i read the knots/arrows from left to right?

Some people read them left to right to make sure they don't miss one. Some may read them right to left.

As long as you do all the knots, it doesn't really matter. Just as long as you complete the pattern from the top down ;)

alright thanks :) but if i started in the middle of a row or skipped a row, everything would get messed up, right?

Starting in the middle of a row is fine, as long as you can keep track of what you've done.

Skipping a row is BAD. :)
