how do i read the patterns?

You read the patterns from left to right starting with the first row.
Let's say you have four strings.
1) Tie the 1st with the 2nd
2) Tie the 3rd with the 4th
That should finish the first row.
The second row will fit kinda in between the first row's knots.
You'll skip the first string.
3) Tie 2nd string to 3rd
4) Then repeat the process

It's hard to explain so if you didn't understand, watch one of the tutorials that have the pattern next to it so you can follow along.
