I find them so confusing!! how do you know where to start?! HELP! please:)

You start on the first line. :) I usually start from the left side. Tie a knot to keep the string together and tape it to a table or other hard surface, safety pin it to your jeans (if it's a small pattern), or use a clipboard to keep it place. Let's use this pattern as example:
