RE: Private Beta - New website by fb101 4 years ago

Good news and bad news...

First, the problem with "images not being updated" should be solved. However, it will likely require that you clear your cache. The configuration I changed is on the server, not in the "code". Which means, if you still identify some problems (images not being updated), it'll probably be because the image is really not updated (because I forgot to program it - not because the server is showing the same image).

Now, the bad news is that I've witnessed some slow network performance again on the new server. It worries me... Especially a week or two before the go-live... The weird part is that it seems to be fine for mostly everybody (except me). Maybe something between my internet provider and the new server is the bottleneck... I'm still not reassured by that... Let me know again if you see some problems on your side...

I'll keep you updated.

1)-I tried to edit a kumihimo pattern on privatebeta, but there is no button for ?save as #......? so I can only save it as a new pattern.

2)About the updated images for edited normal patterns: It worked fine for me. I see the updated images like it should.

@Nicolas

As you mentioned the speed, I did the test to download the big photo you told us a few days ago.
I cleared the cache, the wifi speed is 74, 9 and 24.9. It took 3 seconds to download the entire photo. I don't know if the data are useful for you! (android phone, WiFi, fron Uruguay)

RE: Private Beta - New website by fb101 4 years ago

Hi!

I spent the entire evening and a part of the night yesterday benchmarking the server to finally realize the speed problem was on my side... There's something wrong with my internet provider (at home) and since it's intermittent I thought it was the server... But it's not.

@Celicia : Thanks for testing again. I consider the download time you have is pretty acceptable given the distance. That confirms (with all the tests I've made yesterday) that the server was probably never the problem...

@kleinevos : I added the "save as #..." to the list.

I'll make a list of the remaining things (maybe tonight if time allows). Once I do, don't hesitate to add anything that's missing (I'm pretty sure there are since sometimes I was fixing the things in the code as I was reading your replies). I'll push anything that is not essential to the "version 2" - my goal is that we have the strict minimum functionalities to make the switch (everything necessary should be working though) and spend as much time as possible on the server configuration (lots of small details remain). At this point, my priority is to make sure the transition is smooth and nothing is missing in the config that could have "lasting impacts" (it's easy to add a functionality later, but having a part of our users being unable to visit the site for an extended period of time because of a bad configuration is something I really want to avoid).

My initial goal was to make the switch on March 7th, but my target is now March 14th. You can consider it'll be this date unless something very exceptional happens...

I haven't had the occasion to mention it yet... But thank you so much for the input you've given and the time you've spent testing the new website. It's been incredibly helpful and I really appreciate :-)!!!

Ok here's my "draft list" of things to do at the moment.

- Show alert for new PM (inbox)
- Redirect old links to new ones (so people don't end up with "page not found" because it was moved to a new URL)
- Create standard error pages
- Fix the "incorrect information displayed on some patterns"
- Increase view counts (patterns, images, etc.)
- Create temporary search page (this will be a "available soon" page)
- Save as new pattern button is missing
- Save as # kumihimo button is missing and/or not working
- Setup ads
- Set "Is1212 pattern" information on save
- Verify server accessibility of older computers (some windows 7 can't access private beta now)
- Fix background color (this'll be done at the last moment to avoid confusion)
- Setup easy deployment (to be able to the site without shutting it down - except for major updates)
- Test backups
- Migration test (official dry-run to check everything is fine a few days before going live)
- Fix notifications / news -> I'm pretty sure I've fixed most of them, but I haven't pushed the update on private beta since... Once it's pushed I'll need your input to know if it seems all resolved or if there are still incorrect cases...
- Pattern image not generated (see my comment on privatebeta after kleinevos')

I eliminated most "server config" and technical details... But that's where there's the most job to be done...

RE: Private Beta - New website by fb101 4 years ago

Oh... By the way I played a lot with configs related to images (generated images, etc.) on the server. I think I fixed everything I broke, but there might be some "new" anomalies...

RE: Private Beta - New website by kleinevos 4 years ago

Some more to-do?s:
- Posts in the guestbook still have the wrong user.
- Answers to guestbook posts are not shown in the newsfeed

After editing a pattern the thumbnail showed the updated image, but the old image was on the pattern page itself. But clicking the update-generator-image solved it. So if we keep using that it?ll work for us.

I did two alpha patterns (one with the same strings and rows and the other with more rows) in both cases the 'Rotate CW" and "Rotate CCW" don't work. Also don't work for old patterns.

RE: Private Beta - New website by kleinevos 4 years ago

- 1) I have edited an account: Changed name and password and mail address. Everything seemed to work fine, but when I tried to log into this account to test as a normal user, I could not login.
Then I tried to log back in into my own account and that worked fine (so no password change for my own account like last time I tried).

- 2) Setting a date for a ban on an account does not work. The date I chose was two days off (of the date shown) and I could only push a tab that says ?wis?. No tab that says something like ?save? . The wis-tab did not save the date.

- 3) Another thing that I think is too important to not fix now is the search-tab. We need to use that. For searching regular things (tutorials for example), but also for searching information about users who need a warning or ban, or for checking whether we can change a username to a new name or not.

- 4) About when will we be able to test the moderator tasks?

RE: Private Beta - New website by fb101 4 years ago

Hi!

@Celicia : Question about rotate (CW & CCW) - Does it only rotates the image or does it also rotates the pattern? Rotating the images only should be easy to do.

@kleinevos (3 firsts points are for your first reply) :
A) Posts in the guestbook with the wrong user - I'm pretty sure it's fixed but not deployed.
B) Answers in the guestbook vs newsfeed - I think this one too. I need to make some progress on server config tonight but I'll try to push a more recent code version...
C) Could you point me to the exact image? Have you cleared your history since the "cache problem solved" because that could explain it. Otherwise could you confirm the following : by "thumbnail" you mean in the pattern search page? By old image you mean the big image in the pattern page? Did the problem happened for normal pattern or alpha (or both)?
1) I'll take a look at this.
2) Ban is not supported ATM (it should be saved, but has no effect) - added to the list. What do you mean "I could only push a tab that says "wis"? Have you had any error on the save (some hints that the save didn't work correctly)?
3) I was really trying to avoid working on the search since it's a time consuming. I'll take a look if you tell me it's more important than some other points.
4) My bad. I was sure that was online already. Again, I didn't deploy after the last fixes (I setup email and didnt want the dev server to send email & I think I had some complex migrations to launch so I started working on data migration to avoid doing the work twice. I'll try to find a way to put it online fast).
